HSE work at height access equipment Toolkit released
The HSE has launched a new phase of the Shattered Lives Campaign aimed a slips, trips and fall incidents that cause an estimated £800 million each year. More workplace deaths are triggered by falls from height than any other cause.
A new work at height access equipment toolkit (WAIT) is included.
What WAIT does and does not do
The WAIT Toolkit provides practical advice and guidance on
the factors to consider when selecting access equipment for work at height, how to work at height safely and information on types of access equipment available.
WAIT does not give advice and guidance on specialised and more complex work at height e.g. working on fragile roofs and rope access techniques. These are complex areas of work where formal training and expert help and advice is required.
The campaign involves raising awareness of the impact of slips, trips and falls in the workplace and directs people to the new Shattered Lives website for practical advice and guidance.
The campaign is targeted at those sectors where there is a high number of slips, trips and falls accidents each year, specifically, health and social care, education, food manufacturing, food retail, catering and hospitality, building and plant maintenance, and construction.
Stephen Williams, Regional Director for HSE in London, said:
“These figures highlight the very real and serious nature of preventable slip, trip and fall incidents in the workplace. Slips, trips and falls might sound funny but they shatter the lives of thousands of British workers every year.
“Making improvements doesn’t need to cost the earth and we are encouraging people to visit the Shattered Lives site, where they will be able to get simple and cost effective solutions to help manage slips, trips and falls hazards in their workplace.”
TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber, said:
“Every one of the 40 deaths caused by slips, trips and falls were preventable. The key is proper risk assessment and control measures as highlighted by the HSE. Unions will warmly welcome this practical hard-hitting campaign and will be raising the issue with employers wherever and whenever they can.”
