SMALLER BUILDER DEATH TOLL CONTINUES

Roof fatality highlights rise in proportion of deaths on small sites

The Barry and District News has highlighted the tributes paid to a popular builder and father-of-two from Barry in South Wales who died after falling from a roof on 13 January 2010.

Trevor Webb was working on a roof in a residential property in the village of Pencoedtre Village. It is reported that he “slipped and fell to the ground” from the roof.

His wife Heathar said: “It was bad weather that day, but if he thought for one minute he was in trouble he wouldn’t have gone up. It was probably a job he could have done with his eyes closed, and it was a tragic accident. We are devastated”

The South Wales Police and HSE are investigating the death.

Comment: Major incidents on larger projects attract considerable press attention. However, most construction fatalities occur, like this tragic death, one at a time on small projects involving smaller builders with very little publicity.

The challenge remains for ‘big construction’, regulators and government alike is to identify how such smaller projects can be influenced more effectively to improve awareness of risk and use of sensible controls.
