Company fined after pole held by young surveyor touches power line
WA Fairhurst and Partners has been fined over £25k after trainee engineer, Russell Donald aged 20, was found dead at a plant hire site Echt.
His employer admitted failing to provide sufficient instruction and using a long surveying pole near powerlines. The pole used during the surveying work came into contact with an overhead power line on February 1, 2007. Russell was only found after his father had undertaken his own search.
The Procurator Fiscal said: “investigation found that Fairhurst had given Russell Donald training and he had been advised to watch out for overhead power lines. At no point did they instruct it was inappropriate to use the pole in the vicinity of power lines and this failure caused Russell Donald’s death.”
Scottish Hydro Electric was also charged with H&S offences although the trial was halted in August 2009.
The fine was imposed upon WA Fairhurst and Partners two months ago but reporting restrictions were in place whilst the Crown considered bringing fresh charges against Scottish Hydro Electric.
The Crown Office has now said no further proceedings will now be taken.
