ODA Chair warns of challenge to maintain safety standards
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has declared commitment to maintaining a “strong health and safety record” as the project enters what will be its toughest year to date.
Chairman John Armitt said: ’We have achieved an excellent safety record on the project so far through the commitment and hard work of everyone on the site. However, there are still huge challenges ahead of us as we enter our toughest year.
‘The number of workers and activity on site will reach its peak with construction underway in every part of the Olympic Park. The logistical challenge is huge with the workforce increasing to around 11,000, and deliveries increasing from the current rate of around 650 per day to around a 1,000 per day.
‘We cannot afford any complacency, but I am confident that with what we have achieved to date the foundations for success are firmly in place.’
The ODA has been working with contractors on site to promote the importance of H&S. Initiatives have included:
- medical centre and health checks for every worker;
- education and health promotion campaigns;
- largescale survey of workeforce checking H&S attitudes and approach;
- award scheme to recognise and celebrate performance and;
- eadership team with reps from contractors acting project H&S ambassadors.
