Timber frame suppliers take action on construction fire hazard
Inside Housing has reported that the UK Timber Frame Association (UKTFA) will operate a Site Safe scheme to improve fire safety on timber frame building sites.
The importance of the scheme has been highlighted by the major fire on a timber frame under construction in Peckham during November 2009.
UKTFA manufacturers are required to explain the fire risks to contractors and developers on large sites and confirm that they have acted to mitigate fire risks from the end of January 2010.
From March 2010 UKTFA independent health and safety inspectors will check fire safety measures on site and any problems will be reported to principal contractor.
UKTFA is also to fund research into products to mitigate fire hazards e.g. fire retardants, compartmentalising unfinished buildings etc.
Geoff Arnold, Chair of UKTFA said they aimed to embed safety more firmly into day to day practice with the Site Safe scheme
