Mobile elevating platform incident leaves operator “fighting for life”
It has been reported that a mobile elevating platform operator has been trapped between the machine and steelwork at the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre currently under construction in Stratford, London adjacent to the Olympic Park.
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: “We were called just before 9.40am on Wednesday (09.12.09) morning to Temple Mill Lane to reports of a man unconscious. We sent an ambulance crew and a doctor in a car to the scene.”
She added that the man was treated and taken to The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel in a state of cardiac arrest. The report states that the ”construction worker is fighting for his life”.
Comment: Industry bodies recently issued a warning and guidance on planning and using mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) in confined overhead areas. This type of work has increased in recent years and has led to a number of accidents.
