MOBILE CRANE PLANNING FOR SAFE GROUND

Industry bodies issue guidance on securing mobile crane stability

Overturning is one of the most common serious incidents associated with the use of mobile cranes. The ’cause’ is often inability of the ground to support loads imposed on the outriggers.

The Precast Flooring Federation (PFF) and the British Construction Steelwork Association (BCSA) have, following consultation with HSE, agreed guidance to assist companies in the “planning and assessment of hardstand requirements for mobile crane use”.

The Safety Bulletin aims to provide information to the principal contractor, crane appointed person , crane supervisor, crane hire operator, and site supervisor, outlining the steps to be taken to ensure adequate consideration is provided for hardstand capabilities and outrigger loadings.
