New design and content for HSE human factors website
The importance of human factors in helping avoid accidents and ill-health at work is increasing. The HSE new website takes a topic-focused approach to human factors.
Reducing error and influencing behaviour (HSG48) is the key document providing an introduction to generic industry guidance on human factors. This guidance can now be downloaded free of charge.
Human factors refer to environmental, organisational and job factors which influence behaviour at work in a way which can affect health and safety. This definition includes the following three interrelated aspects that must be considered:
- Job: including areas such as the nature of the task, workload, the working environment, the design of displays and controls, and the role of procedures.
- Individual: including his/her competence, skills, personality, attitude, and risk perception.
- Organisation: including work patterns, the culture of the workplace, resources, communications, leadership and so on.
