WORKMAN INJURED AT HOME OF PRIME MINISTER

Workman falls from height cleaning gutters at home of Aussie PM

A workman has been hospitalised after falling from height during gutter cleaning on the roof of the Brisbane home of the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.

The PM’s office described the incident as ”a terrible accident” and  added that “following the accident an ambulance was called and the tradesman involved is now receiving medical treatment in a Brisbane hospital”

Comment: This is both unfortunate and embarrasing for the Australian PM. Refurbishment by those at work on domestic properties now constitutes a significant proportion of construction fatalities in the UK. We are aware of some 23 fatalities since 1st April 2009 and 8 occurred on private homes.

The Client requirements under CDM 2007 do not apply to non-business construction work in the UK. The Australian PM is perhaps hoping the same applies in Australia.

Self-cleaning gutters and Robotic Cleaners are ways to eliminate the risk by design. The UK CDM 2007 Designer duty does apply to all projects!
