STEEL ERECTION FATALITY IN SCOTLAND

Workman dies as steelwork collapses during frame erection

The Glasgow Evening Times has reported that a construction worker has died when steel collapsed during erection of a steel frame on a new build housing site in Murano Street, Glasgow.

It reported that the steel erector was working on the Morris and Spottiswood development of flats for a local housing association. A police spokesperson said: “Investigations are at an early stage and the HSE officials have been drafted in.”

A spokesperson for Morris and Spottiswood confirmed the incident happened but could not comment any further. The HSE spokesperson said: “Investigations are under way.”

Comment: This tragic death on a new build major housing project is contrary to trends in the last 12-18 months which has seen the majority of construction sector fatalities occuring on smaller commercial and domestic refurbishment projects. The number and rate fatal injuries in construction have fallen sharply during this period.

Many larger projects will hopefully resume or start up in 2010/2011 as the economy picks up. Clients, designers and contractors will therefore need to renew their efforts to ensure that the number and frequency of deaths on such projects do not return to the levels seen previously.
