LONG REACH MEWP DEATH IN US

Workman dies as mobile elevating platform topples

A construction worker has died after falling over 40m when the mobile elevating platform on which he was working overturned in downtown Philadelphia, USA.

The vehicle apparently toppled when a pavement grating give way. Investigators are also looking to establish if the workman was harnessed into the platform. It is believed he may have free-fallen to the ground.

Three members of the public were injured from falling debris and tenants in an apartment block were evacuated.

Comment: Mobile elevating work platforms provide a versatile and safe means of access / place of work. However, this tragic incident highlights that no place of work is ‘risk free’ and that there are many factors to consider and implement in establishing safe use of MEWPs.
