FALLING DEBRIS FROM TOWERS

Calls for stricter control after debris falls from Calgary sites

There have been calls for further controls following a further incidence of debris falling from a high rise development in Calgary, Canada.

A local prohibition was issued after scaffolding fell from the 19th floor to the city below. This is the latest in a number of similar incidents at Calgary construction sites with 5 investigations into debris falling from high rises. In one case a 3-year-old girl died and two other members of her family injured. Charges were laid under the Alberta Safety Codes Act.

Comment: There have thankfully been very few fatal injuries or incidents caused by falling materials on major UK towers during the last 10 years. However, these incidents in Canada are a useful reminder of the potential consequences where controls are not maintained.
