CONCRETE BEAM FALL INQUEST OPENS

Inquiry opens into death of labourer during bridge demolition

A Coroners Inquest has opened into the death of Gary Drinkald a labourer who was crushed by a 32 tonne concrete beam during demolition of a bridge over a railway in Essex on 9 April 9 2006.

The inquest heard that the beam was being removed by crane. It was raised onto the back of a lorry and then moved unexpectedly crushing the deceased.

The inquest continues and is expected to last as long as three weeks.
