EXCAVATORS AND OVERHEAD POWER LINES

Operator trapped in cab after excavator strikes power cable in US

The frightening consequences of a excavator striking a overhead power line is illustrated by an incident in the US in which an excavator operator was left stranded in his cab after the boom became entangled in high voltage power lines.

The Photograph shows a very patient operator waiting for the supply to be isolated before leaving his cab.

Comment: This incident is a reminder that contact (or close proximity) with overhead powerlines is dangerous (30% of UK construction sector electrocutions) and expensive to all the businesses involved. Far better to follow the simple precautions that should be identified by a risk assessment, managed and monitored on site.
