FATALITY PROMPTS SAFER LIFTING METHOD

Portable building company changes system after tragic death

The Wolverhampton Express and Star has reported that Mobile Mini UK Ltd, a portable building company has been fined £80k after an employee died when he fell from a portable unit being delivered to a West Bromwich construction site in January 2008.

The workman had been attaching lifting tackle to the top of the unit when he fell 4m. He died the following day from head injuries.

The Crown Court heard from lawyers representing the company that at the time of incident they were examing alternative methods to lift the units from the bottom.

The ”process of looking into and rolling out the bottom lifting technology was accelerated and about 75 per cent of the unit stock can now be lifted in that way.”
