36 DEATHS AT INDIAN CHIMNEY COLLAPSE SITE

Power plant chimney collapses during construction

Relief and rescue workers have been struggling to find survivors at the Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh India. A chimney has collapsed killing at least 36 people and trapping others. The BBC provides a full report with video footage.

The chimney collapsed as some 100 workers and engineers were engaged in the construction work, reportedly executed by a Chinese company named SEPKO.

Eyewitnesses report heavy rain and a lighting strike at the time of the collapse. One man said “While I was walking near my house I could see the chimney crashing. It fell like a stick. It was difficult to reach the spot. Around 150-200 labourers came out running and we could see mangled bodies of six to seven men.”

Officials involved in constructing the chimney said that the structure was to be built to a height of 275m and was 100m when it collapsed.
