RESEARCH PROVIDES A LIFT FOR MEWPS

Study shows mobile elevating platforms are safe and effective

It has been reported by Contract Journal that research commissioned by Crown House Technologies (CHT) of the Laing O’Rourke Group has found mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) to be safer and more effective than other methods of work at height.

The results were presented to the Europlatform conference in Milan, Italy where CHT told the conference that, following a complete review of work up to 4.5m for M&E installation,: “we were able to provide evidence that MEWPs are safer, more productive, ergonomic and avoid unnecessary strain injury”.

MEWPs were involved in a smaller proportion of accidents compared with podiums, mobile towers, ladders and A-frames.

Comment: At a time when MEWPs have been involved in some fatal and serious injuries it is worth recalling the alternative. During the early 1990′s some 20 deaths occurred annually during new build steel erection and roofwork. These deaths have now been virtually eliminated through a combination of MEWPs and safety nets.
