POWER LINE STRUCK DURING ROOFWORK

Workman survives 11kV line shock and fall from roof

Three companies firms have been ordered to pay over £58k in fines and prosecution costs after a workman constructing a poultry shed received an electric shock and subsequently fell from the roof on which he was working.

The injured man was involved in a roofwork project and was carrying metal roof sheets when the incident occured. He suffered an electric shock and burns and then fell over 2m from the roof.

HSE inspector Chris Wilcox said: “Thomas Bates was fortunate to survive a shock from an 11kV overhead power line, let alone the subsequent fall from the shed roof. This incident was entirely avoidable. There should have been thorough risk assessments carried out by the employers in this case, and suitable precautions taken. There was also no edge protection around the edge of the roof, so there was clearly a much higher risk of falls from height.”
