FATAL ROOF FALL DURING REFURBISHMENT

Worker dies falling through rooflight during refurb of factory roof

The Express and Star has reported that on 11 September a workman fell some 13m to the floor through the roof of a west Bromwich factory undergoing refurbishment. The unamed workman was a contractor undertaking the work. He died as a result of head and other injuries to his body.

The building is reported as leased to 24/7 Engineering Services. A representative of the company said: “We’re all in shock. We’re due to take control of the building and there has been some refurbishment going on.” Further enquiries suggest the deceased worker fell through a rooflight onto the concrete floor below.

Comment: Falls through roofs remains the biggest single cause of fatal falls during commercial refurb projects. Clients, designers and contractors now all have overlapping duties under CDM 2007 to design, plan, manage and monitor the work in a manner that secures safety.
