FALL ARREST TRAINING PUTS DIRECTOR IN DOCK

Firm and director fined for failures during training of linesman

Nicholas McCarthy and Fenland Electrical Network Services have been fined a total of over £38k in fines and prosecutions costs after a 59-year-old linesman fell because his harness was not attached during training for an emergency descent from a mobile elevated work platform in 2007.

The fall injured his leg requiring subsequent amputation below the knee. He also fractured his pelvis and sustained tendon damage and spinal injuries.

HSE inspector Gavin Bull said: “ the case is a good example of why safety measures are needed, particularly for training and work at height.”
