Priorities published for 2009 onwards provide clues for action
Current priorities for the HSE Construction Division have been revealed. Construction inspectors are targeting:
- Refurbishment: focusing on both major and smaller projects by head office meetings and intensive site inspections;
- Designers and Clients: early interventions on larger projects and proactive engagment of major players;
- Homes: strategic work with national home builders and smaller developers;
- Tower Cranes: site and head office audits of tower crane companies;
- Silica: raising awareness of silica and the need for control measures;
- Local Authorities: work to increase and support LA construction interventions;
- Roofwork: action to raise awareness and standards at smaller sites and;
- Manual Handling: working through the supply chain network.
The aim of the HSE strategy is to build on recent reductions in the rate of fatal and major injuries and the incidence of work-related ill health and embed the improvements made.
The interventions are being targeted at high-risk activities and sectors with a general focus on small and micro businesses. There are 6 cross-cutting themes: well managed projects, embedding of the CDM 2007, management of occupational health/reducing health risks, worker engagement, competence and leadership.
