Crane overturns onto scaffold at Australian University project
The Australian press has reported that a mobile crane has overturned onto a building surrounded by scaffolding on the University of Queensland campus. There were no injuries although the scaffolding was damaged.
A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson is reported to have stated that people on site and in a nearby building were evacuated as a safety measure but the building was not damaged.
Comment: Mobile crane overturns are usually very simple. The loading on a outrigger(s) exceeds the ground bearing capacity. There is no substitute for thorough assessment of the ground, calculation of anticipated loads on outriggers and determination of how the load will be spread under each outrigger.
