Recent fatal fall from scaffold prompts issue of HSE safety alert
In February 2009 the HSE Board considered introducing a system of safety alerts to enable information about incidents to be shared at the earliest opportunity.
The system appears to have started with the unusual issue of a press release following a fatal fall from a scaffold in the Hastings areas on Monday 10th August 2009. HSE are urging employers and construction workers to make sure that they work safely at height following the death of the 31-year-old man.
HSE Inspector, Melvyn Stancliffe, said: “The entire construction industry needs to make sure that workers are properly trained and supervised for the tasks they are given and that they follow accepted industry practices – such as taking measures to prevent falls.”
Comment: The early release and sharing of information on fatalities and other incidents is to be welcomed. However, it is important that sufficient facts are made available. The nature/size of project and a reasonble description of circumstances of the incident seem to be the bare minimum to make the system worthwhile.
