Crane misses supermarket manager as it overturns on retail unit
The manager of a supermarket in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland has narrowly avoided death as parts of a crane crashed through the roof of his office.
The crane was involved with a Graham Construction project when the ground on which it stood was insufficient to sustain the loads imposed thereby causing the crawler mobile to overturn.
The crane jib fell onto the shop roof narrowly missing store manager Keith Glasgow who provides a graphic account. He said: ”About a three to four foot block on the end of the wire rope swung like a pendulum out over the top of the roof. It landed through the roof, through my office ceiling and straight down on to my office chair.”
A spokeswoman for Graham Construction said: “We confirm that there was an incident where a crane tilted sideways from its working platform when the ground below it gave way on a site in Carrickfergus.
There were no injuries arising from the incident. We are co-operating with the relevant authorities as they and we investigate the cause of this incident. Until these investigations are complete we are unable to make any further comment.”
