EXCAVATOR CAUSES FATAL BLOW

Workman dies after being struck by excavator on building site

A construction worker has died after being hit by an excavator on a building site at the rear of industrial premises off Claybrook Drive, Redditch, Worcestershire.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said that when the emergency services arrived on site ”resuscitation was being carried out on the man by members of the public. Crews took over and used their advanced life support skills.”

“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of everyone at the scene, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead.”

The operator of the excavator is believed to be in his 40s and suffering from shock after the incident. He  was taken to a local hospital.

Comment: Excavators have been in the news recently following a rise in the number of fatalities associated with the use of excavator quick hitch devices. It is not clear whether quick hitch issues are involved in this tragic incident. The death highlights the hazards involved groundworks particularly where excavators are involved.
