MEWP FAILURE REQUIRES RESCUE

Cherrypicker collapses during inspection of underside of bridge

A lorry-mounted boom type elevating work platform has collapsed during inspection of the underside of a bridge in Ulster.

Two Amey Consulting (Belfast) workers were examining the bridge for defects when the incident occurred. During manouvering of the boom under the bridge the arm collapsed causing one man to fall into the river whilst the other was rescued from a ledge by firefighters.

Both were examined by medical staff who confirmed that neither was injured. The cause of the failure is not known.
