TOWER CRANE REGISTER CONSULTATION

Industry body meets to discuss tower crane register consultation

HSE will shortly be publishing a Consultative Document (CD) on proposals for a statutory national tower crane register to come into force in April 2010.

The proposed register is scheduled to be dicussed at the upcoming open meeting of CONIAC on 22 July 2009.

It is understood that the CD will propose standalone Notification of Tower Cranes Regulations with notification linked to the crane thorough examination. The CD will seek views on the scope of the Regulations e.g. all industries or solely construction, ’self erectors’ as well as conventioal tower cranes.

Comment: Three major USA cities are considering a tower crane database. Officials in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia are creating a database to share critical information about active tower cranes in the cities. The plan follows two major New York City crane accidents in 2008.
