Crane lands on occupied apartment block without causing injury
A tower crane has collapsed on a construction site in Tabley Street, Liverpool. The crane landed on a nearby occupied apartment block. There are no reports of serious injuries although the crane driver was taken to hospital.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: “Significant resources are here from the police, fire and regional ambulance and we expect to be here for some time. The end of the crane appeared to pierce part of the roof”. Structural engineers are assessing the damage and HSE are investigating.
Contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland is reported to have said: ” The crane involved in the incident was undertaking a lifting operation well within its design capacity when witnesses report they heard two lound bangs, during which tower crane 2a was seen to bend and collapse on to the adjoining apartment building”
Comment: Photographs, video and comment from witnesses suggest that the crane was in use (not in the process of erection) and that investigators may be starting their enquiries at the base of the crane mast. This incident comes when HSE is about to publish a consultative document on a statutory tower crane resister.
