Apartment block collapses without warning during construction
An apartment building under construction in a presitgous Shanghai location has collapsed causing the death on one 28 year-old construction workman. The collapse was preceded by cracks appearing in flood protection structures.
A nearby witness said: “It was just like an earthquake”. Further construction work has now been halted by the authorities while the cause of the collapse is investigated.
It is being reported that the structure met design standards but the foundations were undermined by excavation work to construct an adjacent car park. A city construction official said: “Earth was piled up too high, too quickly. The pressure difference from the two sides made the earth move sideways… leading to the collapse of the building”.
