MOSCOW BUILDING COLLAPSE THREE DEAD

Three construction workers die after renovated building collapses

The collapse of a four-storey building subject to renovation work in Moscow has claimed the lives of three construction workers and injured six others. Work in the basement area is thought to have damaged a central supporting wall.

A government spokesman said: ”when an attempt was made to expand the basement and dig up the foundation pit, the central wall collapsed, bringing the house down with it.”

There have been a number of such collapses in Moscow in recent months. A major programme of redevelopment is underway involving demolition of older buildings and construction of new homes and commercial properties. An investigation by the authorities has started.
