Mobile crane incident puts children at risk
The 49-tonne mobile crane was involved in lifting a cooling tower at a New Zealand Hospital when it overturned. The boom landed near a bus carrying school children.
The driver managed to stop before colliding with the boom. He said “It was as close as you would want to get. I saw it just before it hit the road.”
The crane owner was unable to explain the incident. He said ”it could have been a computer malfunction, as the machine was working well within its limits.”
Comment: Most incidents involving mobile cranes involve failure to properly assess ground bearing capacity and the support required beneath outriggers. Computer malfunctions are rarer events.
