Maintenance contract worker injured in fall on airport terminal roof

Heathrow Airport Ltd of London has been fined £10k and required to pay over £3k in prosecution costs after an incident at Heathrow Airport Terminal 1 in March 2007. A contract maintenance worker fell into a roof gully whilst walking on the terminal roof causing serious leg injuries to his leg.
Edge protection was not provided and lighting was not working. The injured worker suffered life changing injuries and is now unable to do the work that he used to do.
HSE Inspector, Steve Kirton, said: “Falls from height remain one of the most significant causes of serious injury reported to HSE, yet simple precautions can prevent these falls. Edge protection, or other fall protection, should always be provided where people are working at height”.
