UNSAFE USE OF LIFT TRUCKS

Firm fined after work carried out from pallet on the forks of lift truck

Eazyfone of Macclesfield has been ordered to pay over £7k in fines and prosecution costs after an incident in March 2008 that was observed by two HSE inspectors passing the company premises. A workman was being raised more than two metres on a pallet placed on the forks of a lift truck to fit a CCTV bracket.

HSE Inspector Deborah Walker said: “It is clearly unsafe for anyone to carry out work at height by standing on a pallet raised on a forklift truck. The Eazyfone employee was lucky not to have fallen and been seriously injured or killed. This demonstrates the need for companies to carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments to ensure that a safe system of work is in place.”

Comment: Lift truck can be used safely and legally for work at height provided a proper platform and controls are provided in accordance with the published HSE standard.
