POWER CABLE STRIKE EXPLOSION

Workman hospitalised after cutting through power cable

A construction worker is reported to have been rushed to hospital after cutting through a power cable on a Sheffield street. The man was working on Meadow Street, in the Shalesmoor area of the city, when the incident occurred.

An explosion was heard and colleagues called for an ambulance, which took the injured worker to the Northern General Hospital. The fire service was alerted to the incident as a precaution.

Comment: The precautions necessary to prevent such incidents are well known: plans, site survey, cable location devices, safe digging practices and a project specific safe system of work. These precautions can difficult to implement in certain locations e.g. cable in concrete, and supplies may need to be made ‘dead’ before work commences. CDM 2007 requires the project client to provide information and this case highlights the importance of identifying and sharing this information at at early stage in the project.
