CHINESE BRIDGE COLLAPSE

Failure of viaduct under demolition kills 6 people on road below

A viaduct has collapsed in the central China Province of Hunan killing 6 people. A further 17 were injured and taken to hospital. The viaduct was the first urban flyover in Hunan and came into use in 1995.

Some 200m of the viaduct on eight columns failed burying the road beneath. A government source said police have ‘detained people initially held responsible for the accident’.

Explosives had been used to demolish a section of the viaduct and the collapsed section was also scheduled for demolition. A full investigation is to be undertaken by the health and safety at work authority.
