Views sought on recently published lifting and carrying guidance
HSE is seeking the views on recently published guidance on giving information on load weights. The responses will be treated anonymously and respondents will not be contacted. The consultation ends on 29 May 2009.
This guidance is said not to represent a new requirement. It is ‘additional information’ for employers about provision of information on load weights. Regulation 4 of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR) requires employers to provide information about the weight of loads.
The guidance provides additional advice on how this part of the MHOR applies to various kinds of work, and how to comply. Providing information about load weights can be useful but it is only one step taken to comply with the regulations. Priority should be given to to the risk control measures to eliminate or reduce risk e.g. handle it mechanically, use lifting aids, or subdivide the load where practicable.
