TV aerial and dish installers subject to safety campaign
HSE and Local authorities are undertaking a safety campaign aimed at TV aerial and satellite dish installers during the digital switchover across Devon and Cornwall. Officers will be contacting electrical retailers and installers to provide advice and self-check guides. Visits are also planned to a number of shops and tradesmen in the region.
The campaign is part of a wider project to raise safety standards among installers working on roofs or other high sites erecting aerials and satellite dishes. The aim is to weed out rogue traders who may be taking advantage of the changes and cutting corners putting themselves and others at risk.
HSE inspector, David Cory, said: “the trade has developed its own safe working procedures in which ladders can be secured using simple ladder stability devices and a strap secured via an eyebolt drilled into the building’s wall. The installer also uses a harness and rope system which will prevent a fall from the ladder as they work on the installation or while climbing. The public should expect a competent installer to follow these procedures if they come to their home.”
Comment: The Confederation of Aerial Industries Ltd (CAI) is an industry body for the aerial and satellite industry. The CAI has published a number of standards including Guidelines on Safe Operating Procedures for the Aerial & Satellite Industry providing guidance to help aerial and satellite dish installers to work safely at height.
