Prosecution highlights risks during work at height on cranes
The need to assess the risks of falling from height during work on cranes has been highlighted by the prosecution of MES Environmental Ltd, of Wolverhampton, after a workman fell 6m from an overhead travelling crane.
The firm was ordered to pay over £10k in fines and prosecution costs.
The man was working on the cross travel beam of the crane when he fell suffering multiple fractures. He remained in hospital for several weeks after the accident and has not yet returned to work.
Comment: This incident occured in factory premises on an overhead travelling crane. However, it is a timely reminder for the construction sector where mobile and tower cranes frequently involve work at a height during erection and maintenance.
The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) publish industry standards on assessing and controlling work at height on cranes.
