Northern Ireland contractor provides example of best practice
John Graham (Dromore) Ltd is trialling a number of new health and safety measures. A spokesperson said ”the combination of management driven processes and behavioural based safety strategies is driving a cultural revolution in site based health and safety.” The approach includes:
-
establishment of a mobile-phone zones on site rather than a ban on use of phones;
-
wearing of gloves unless operation can be shown to pose no risk of hand injury;
-
behavioural based safety to secure acceptance that precautions are the “right thing to do” and;
-
tackling health by hosting the Action Cancer’s Big Bus on site.
The spokesperson said: “Action Cancer were fantastic; they offer an excellent range of services. A number of the guys on site were able to be tested for a variety of things, such as blood pressure, lung capacity, weight, body mass index and cholesterol. It’s been great; a lot of men perhaps wouldn’t ordinarily go to the doctor but it’s much easier when everyone else is going and no-one is the odd one out, so it has been very worthwhile.”
