    MILTON KEYNES SCAFFOLD COLLAPSE UPDATE

Two construction companies committed for trial after scaffold death

On 11 April 2006 a major scaffold collapsed at construction site in Milton Keynes. The scaffold collapse was contained within the site boundary although three workers who were on the scaffold sustained multiple injuries. Three days later one of the workmen died in hospital.

On 21st April 2009 two contractors, NNM Scaffolding Ltd and Lee Smith Carpentry Ltd, were both committed for trial to Peterborough Crown Court (sitting at Huntingdon). A plea and case management hearing is now scheduled for 3 June 2009.

At an earlier hearing on 13th February 2009 the principal contractor, McAleer & Rushe Ltd, had been committed for sentence after pleading guilty to offences under HSW Act Sections 2 and 3.

Comment: At the time of the incident HSE issued a statement with recommendations. These remain relevant today.
