Workman and public injured as piling rig crashes beyond site
Six people were injured when a piling rig collapsed on a construction project adjacent to a major road in Japan. The operator was thrown from the operating postion suffering serious injury.The rig crushed the cab of an HGV travelling on National Highway Route 20 and two pedestrians were injured. A 62-year-old woman was taken to a hospital unconscious whilst a 33-year-old man suffered minor injuries.
A eye witness said: ”I’d walked about 10m past the site when I heard a tremendous noise behind me. Turning round I saw the crane had toppled and was surrounded by a thick cloud of dust. The horn of the truck [the crane fell on] kept on sounding.” A further witness said ”It seemed like the man in the driver’s seat of the truck had his legs stuck and couldn’t get out, but he was moving the upper half of his body.”
