PARTNERS FINED AFTER SHUTTER FALLS

Workmans leg amputated in falling shuttering incident

Richard and Matthew Triggs, partners of RT Trailers and Farm Buildings Limited of Park Cottage, Frogmore, Kingsbridge have been fined £50k following an incident in February 2007 when an employee was seriously injured during loading and transporting of steel shuttering panels used to erect walls on farms.

A tractor and grain trailer were used to move the panels and the injured workman climbed into the trailer to guide and unhitch the shutters. During this process shutters slipped and toppled crushing his leg.

HSE Principal Inspector, Andrew Kingscott, said: “This accident demonstrates the serious – and sometimes very personal life-changing – consequences of failing to assess risks and properly planning work activity when lifting and transporting heavy components.”
