SENTENCE AWAITED ON WEMBLEY DEATH

Contractor faces fine after platform fatality at Wembley Stadium

PC Harrington Contractors Ltd has admitted contraventions of health and safety legislation arising from the death of a workman at the Wembly Stadium site in 2004.

The death occurred when a platform fell during lifting operations and struck Patrick O’Sullivan who was working below. The  guilty plea was entered the at City of London Magistrates.

It has been reported by Contract Journal that ”HSE officials had asked Harrington to improve site practices, but their warnings were ignored. After the previous incident the HSE had advised Harrington to ensure no-one was below the platforms during lifting operations to form the stadium’s concrete cores.”

The HSE enforcement database shows that in October 2003, on a site in Knightsbridge London, the company was served with a prohibition notice because there was “inadequate control of the striking of table forms, risk of serious personal injury, potentially fatal if struck by table.”

The company will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on 1 May 2009.
