New ‘Chapter 8′ updates advice to make road works safer
Updated guidelines for highways maintenance engineers and contractors to make temporary traffic management at road works safer and more effective have now been published.
Revisions to Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual (Parts 1 and 2) have been taking place over the past two and a half years as the Highways Agency has sought to make road works safer and less stressful for both road users and road workers.
Both revised parts are now available to download free of charge from the DfT website and the key changes have also been summarised. The guidance is for everyone associated with temporary traffic management for construction, maintenance or utility work. The guidelines update those published in June 2006 and the revisions include:
- signage for road users experiencing emergencies in roadworks;
- requirements regarding single lane contra-flow permissions and;
- expansions to the scope of the guidance e.g. works near tramways.
