Property damaged and public in shock after scaffold falls
Cars were struck and pedestrians narrowly avoided injury as a scaffold collapsed in Exeter. The scaffolding was being used as part of a roof refurbishment project. Roads were closed and the area cordoned off after concern that the scaffolding remaining was unstable. There were no injuries but the car of a 21-year-old pregnant woman was struck as she drove past the site. She swerved to avoid being hit by the falling debris and is said to be in shock.
The Police commented: ”We are in the preliminary stages of finding out what happened. It was quite a gusty day so we can only surmise what might have happened. Traffic was absolute pandemonium. The project client said: ”We have suspended the contractor pending the outcome of our own safety investigation and that of the HSE. We will be working with them to help establish the cause of the collapse.”
