HSE recruit Outreach Workers to raise migrant worker awareness
There has been a large influx of migrant workers onto construction sites in London with about 60% of all migrant construction workers in Britain based in the capital. Many of the fatalities involving foreign workers occur during their first week on site.
HSE is to recruit ’Outreach Workers‘ to work alongside Inspectors and other staff to increase interaction with construction workers from Poland, Romania and India. The object is to improve the awareness of vulnerable workers to their rights in relation to H&S at work. This is a new frontline role involving site visits and working with immigrant community and other organisations. The posts are on a 12 month fixed term appointment which may be extended.
Comment: A good deal of health and safety information for migrant workers is already available. These new Outreach Workers should help increase awareness of the guidance and encourage action. It will be interesting to see what the Government Inquiry into construction fatalities concludes as regards the involvement of migrant workers in construction sector deaths.
