EXCAVATOR DRIVER INQUEST

Driver of excavator hailed as hero after fatal incident

The driver of an excavator who died after his vehicle broke through a roadside wall and fell 21m over a cliff has been praised by the coroner. He died trying to avoid stationary traffic in rain and his actions prevented others being hurt.

The inquest in Bristol heard how he swerved and lowered the bucket to reduce speed but was unable to retain control and crashed through the wall. The father-of-four died instantly when the excavator landed landed on its roof. An inspection found no faults with the steering or braking.
