Driver of grab lorry critical after overhead cable strike
A workman is in a critical condition after a lorry mounted grab arm contacted an 11kv overhead cable near Evesham. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a metal digger, on the back of a lorry, which had reportedly made contact with live overhead power cables. A man, near to the lorry, believed to be in his 40s, had suffered extensive burns to his body and was in cardiac arrest.”
Julian Jenkins, at Evesham Fire Station, said: “The lorry was being used to load rubble when the grab arm must have accidently touched an overhead electric cable”. Investigation into the incident has been passed to the HSE who have visited the scene.
Comment: There are some basic precautions that must be followed when working near overhead powerlines. HSE advice is contained Guidance note GS6 Avoidance of danger from overhead electric power lines and most Electricity Supply companies provide free general advice and will advise on specific locations.
