Death during unloading steel is a reminder for UK contractors
The death of a workman whilst unloading steel on a large construction site in New Zealand has highlighted the risk and the guidance on precautions that has been published in the UK. The workman died when ”steel dislodged while being unloaded from a truck.” The deceased was said to be ”a highly experienced self-employed contractor who had a history spanning 20 years in construction”.
Comment: In the last 12 months there have been two deaths on UK construction sites involving unloading of steel. This incident, though thousands of miles away, should act as a further reminder of the potential consequences when off-loading steel goes wrong and of the required precautions.
