SCAFFOLDING ADVICE ON STANDARDS

New tube and fitting scaffolding standard published by NASC

The National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) has launched guidance note TG20:08 – A Guide to good Practice for Scaffolding with Tubes and Fittings that details how tube and fitting scaffolding can be erected to comply with European standard BS EN 12811-1 (superseding BS 5973).

TG20:08 is the standard by which tube and fitting scaffolding should be erected and designed. It is written as a practical, user friendly guide for scaffolding contractors and designers. The guidance will also assist other construction professionals working with scaffolding contractors.  The main changes include:

  • revised processes of justifying a scaffolding design;
  • the extent of façade/sway bracing required;
  • increased tie arrangements and alternatives for greater flexibility and;
  • more varied arrangements for some sheeted scaffolds than under BS 5973

The guidance is in two volumes, one for every day use by scaffolding contractors and the second for specific use by scaffold designers. Priced at £135 (for the two volumes) plus £6 post and packing direct from the NASC.

Comment: Scaffolding contractors and others need to digest and adopt this new guidance which HSE has indicated will be used as the industry standard guiding Inspector enforcement within two years.
